David Loades is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Wales and an Honorary Member of the University of Oxford History Faculty. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a former President of the Ecclesiastical History Society. He is the author of over thirty books. He lives in Burford in Oxfordshire.
A wonderful surprise ending to one of the most beautifully written books imaginable. This is the story of Erica Sparks, a news reporter that once had a career, made some mistakes and is now trying to re-invent herself, having lost her previous career, her marriage and custody of her 8yr old daughter Jenny. There isn't much theoretical discussion here, nor is there much explanation of how women's disguises were able to work--and, despite the title, much time is given to vivandieres, nurses and the like..
