The subject of this book is the formation of Western Europe from the late 10th to the early 13th century. During these years the economic face of Europe and its position in the world were transformed. Civilization, as we understand it today, was born. Although the period witnessed great historical events, such as the capture of Jerusalem by the Crusaders in 1099 and of Constantinople by their successors in 1204, the most significant events are often the obscure ones and the most significant utterances are often those of men withdrawn from the world and speaking to the very few.
R. W. Southern is a Fellow of the British Academy and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol, Exeter, and St John's College, Oxford, and of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He was President of St John's College, Oxford, from 1969 to 1981. He was Chichele Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford from 1961 to 1969, and is a past President of the Selden Society and the Royal Historical Society. His publications include: "The Making of the Middle Ages" (1953), "Western Views of Islam in the Middle Ages" (1962), "Western Society and the Church in the Middle Ages" (1970), "Robert Grosseteste" (1986), and "St Anselm: a Portrait in a Landscape" (1990).

However, this is a solid novel with a sound plot and worth the read.

The third edition of "Art and Its Significance" is greatly improved over the second edition, mostly because it expanded the Kant section to include some sections from Kant's Third Critique that were puzzlingly absent from the earlier editions (though a few critical sections are still missing), and because it has enlarged the Derrida section to include more important writings. They're super cute and fit perfectly on a cubicle wall. Its rulers also continue to reject elections and broad human rights. Its a quick read and thoroughly enjoyable!
