His TV and radio work has been nominated for both EMMY and Sony awards and he has written six books, including Poor Britain and After the Gold Rush.

Decades later, Carroll is still adept at finding turtles in the landscape, in spite of human intrusion and the loss of habitat. His life was not easy, but there is no self pity in these pages.
